#AU2012 #UKBimCrew CM2979-R – Collaboration Systems: It’s Good to Share

Presided over by Martin Duke, Aurecon.

Held in Jasmin Room A where the projector just about drowned out voices to the point of having to shout.

Collaboration Platforms

There are many options available in the collaboration space, and they offer a diverse range of features and functionality. What key features do you look for? For example:
Server side processing (publishing)
External access
Distributed architecture
Support for multiple CADD platforms
Integration with Windows features such as SharePoint and Active Directory
Workflows
Mobile access
Automatic File Naming

Key Outcomes/business requirements:

When moving a business to a collaborative model whereby work is shared between multiple offices and regions what key outcomes and business requirements should be defined?
Accessibility
Security
Project cost savings
Ability to share work with low cost centres
Better project outcomes due to a single source of truth for data.
Reduced risk
Implementation and enforcement of standards

In Citrix environment when using just AutoCAD be aware that full screen cursor kills the performance as it requires the whole screen to be updated. So reduce the cursor to 5 or 10%.

Newforma gets a mention for possible control over data speed. Never heard that as a comment before.

Allows tasks to be concurrent that used to be sequential.

Build talent from a global pool.

Social media comes under the spotlight and can it be applied to business? Mentioned NewsGator and https://www.box.com/

News feed and community building. The principles around social media could well soon be coming up in the workplace. Corporate and office sharepoint sites. Sharing is the default culture of a generation of people below the age of 25. The have grown up with the desire to share and give things away rather than keep it to themselves. These are coming into the workplace now and their expectations are different?

It still seems the challenge is finding a good solution that ticks all the books.

You have to have check in and check out for collaboration. if you just download a file and then put it on a windows server, thats not collaboration as its then copies and not a single source of truth. The data needs to be in sync and with an Audit trail.

Cytrix getting a lot of mentions, rather than take the data to the user, bring the user to the data.

Do you have a fat pipe? Then it means it might affect your capability to collaborate?

About Shaun Farrell

I have been involved in the construction sector since 1986 and over the years I have seen things change dramatically. Much of the change has been directly as a result of technology. This blog will be about the key combinations of People, Process and Technology. Any views expressed here are strictly my own.
