The missing workstage

The more meetings I attend, the more workshops I participate in and the more I talk to other people in the industry the more I am convinced. The BIM/VDC process gets a lot of press and is the current buzz in the construction industry. I think the key word there is “construction”. Where architects, engineers and consultants struggle to collaborate and coordinate and the client is a 50/50 bet on the benefits then the contractor stands to benefit the most. I see a new stage in the contract/plan of works where the contractor takes ownership of the data, coordinates and builds a 3D model for construcion. The design team will then re-convene and work together in this new work stage to create a pre-build model which will then be signed off and built. The contractor should take the stand and say that they will not build without a complete 3D model, the counter balance, the promise of no variations as everything should then be known!

About Shaun Farrell

I have been involved in the construction sector since 1986 and over the years I have seen things change dramatically. Much of the change has been directly as a result of technology. This blog will be about the key combinations of People, Process and Technology. Any views expressed here are strictly my own.
